World Book Day at JKPS

World Book Day has been celebrated since April 1995. It was founded by UNESCO to celebrate books and encourage a love of reading worldside.

Of course, here at JKPS we love reading too so it’s one of the highlights of the school year.

During this year’s World Book Day, the team at the Mog Chronicle ran around the playground soaking up all the weird and wonderful outfits that students wore to school.

Here are some of our favourites:

Marlee-Rae, Jasmine and Hania in Year 6 were dressed up as Simon, Alvin and Theodor from Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Molly and Otti and Emily from Year 2 went Hogwarts crazy dressed as Harry Potter characters Harry, Herione and Luna.

Frida in Year 5 looked incredible as Hazel Wong from Murder Most Unladylike.

Hywel in Year 2 dressed up as a magician and Ffion in Year 5 took on the character of Astrid AKA Asteriod fro Roller Girl.

Max in Year 1 was the Grinch and Lea in Year 3 was Tashi.

Mia in Year 6 was dressed up as Sherlock Holmes the detective.

We spoke exclusively to Ms. Amy – JKPS’ reading lead – who told us why she’s so passionate about World Book Day.

“I care about reading because it allows us to use our imagination, connect with others and it allows us to regulate sometimes when we are feeling dysregulated,” she said.

“I think a book is good when it is a page turner and I would recommend it to someone else.”

Ms. Amy encouraged the school to be creative in their World Book Day costumes and not just think of book characters but also consider dressing up as their favourite words, idioms and metaphors.

“Today we are doing things a bit differently,” she said. “I’ve got eyes in the back of my head, I’m all ears and I wear my heart on my sleeve,” she explained.

One of the highlights of World Book Day is the teacher reading relay and for the first time ever, two Year 6 students were taking part.

Otis planned to run along the corridors and read stories to every class in the school along with all the other class teachers because Ms. Rosa is pregnant.

“I’m honored to pass the torch of the reading relay to Otis,” Ms. Rosa said. “I have no doubt he will be faster, stronger and a better reader than me.”

Otis said he was ready.

“I think I will be much quicker than Ms. Rosa. I’m a little worried I might mess up which classroom I’m meant to be going to and I think Mr. Tom is the one to beat.”

But Otis said he wasn’t nervous about reading in front of lots of other students. “It’s a privilege,” he said. “I think that it’s quite cool being the first person to do the teacher relay.”
