EXCLUSIVE: Inside The German First Lady’s Visit To JKPS

Arriving late in a massive limousine, Frau Elke Büdenbender walked into Judith Kerr Primary School on Wednesday evening at around 4 p.m. with our headteacher Mr. Patrick.

The First Lady had come to our school for an exclusive visit as part of her three-day state visit to the U.K. with her husband, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

When she arrived in our school playground there were a whole host of people waiting to greet her.

This included journalists, members of the German Embassy in London, JKPS teachers and Anthem staff. And of course, the Mog Chronicle.

It was the day before a full moon so luckily despite being really dark outside at 4 p.m. she didn’t get the creeps.

To make Ms. Büdenbender feel welcome, the Year 5 pupils and Ms. Julia had chalked the words “WILLKOMMEN” in massive letters on the brick wall in the playground.

After being greeted by everyone, she sat down in the main lunch hall and listened to the choir singing “Bona Nox” in a round by Mozart, followed by “Stille Nacht”.

It sounded really good and everyone got a huge round of applause at the end.

While the choir was singing, Ms. Büdenbender sat watching and mouthing along to some of the songs.

The choir looked really neat but only because Ms. Jodie had switched their dirty muddy jumpers for immaculate new ones shortly before.

We didn’t know if Ms. Büdenbender would be happy with the switch out or if she just wanted to know what Judith Kerr was really like ….. a bit grubby but we love it!

Once the choir finished singing, the First Lady moved to the new library area where she got a cup of tea.

She didn’t drink any of it – we don’t know if she was just too distracted reading and meeting pupils, or if perhaps she didn’t like the taste of it!

She read a small group of students a book called “Jim’s Spectacular Christmas” in English and German.

I was lucky enough to be one of the five Year 6 students who got to shake her hand and listen to the story in the library along with Laurie, Frida, Carolina and Semi.

This was great because it meant the Mog Chronicle got the exclusive scoop.

I was taking loads of pictures – so many that a member of the press said to me: “You’re going to take my job very soon.” I think he’s right.

She asked a lot of questions about the pronounciations of the English words but she did ok in the end.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to talk to her directly because she didn’t have any time but she did give us loads of presents: Books for the school library including the one she read to us and others in English and German.

Afterwards she went to the Reception classroom where the after school club “German Songs and Stories” was being held.

However on her way there, the visit went a little bit off script.

She was unexpectedly greeted by two Year 1 students who said: “Are you a millionaire? You don’t look like one!”

To which, Ms. Büdenbender laughed and didn’t take it very seriously. Phew!

She stood outside the early years area for a while talking to Mr. Patrick and a member of the German Embassy.

Then she departed from the school at 4.50 p.m. with another handshake to me.

She left with loads of bodyguards and loads of police in cars and on motorbikes who controlled the traffic.

After she left, she apparently had a two-hour journey to Windsor Castle where she met King Charles, Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales and had a royal banquet.

We bet she enjoyed her time with us more and we hope we see her in the future.

Back inside the school, everybody wrapped up and second club reclaimed the school hall.

And Ms. Jodie went around and grabbed all the new jumpers back off the students so they could put their grubby ones back on to go home.
