If you live in an older house, you may have a Boggart hole by your front doorstep.
In the old days, coal was delivered down this hole. And the Boggarts who lived in the cellar tidied it up.
This tale of the Boggarts and their gradual disappearance as people switched to using electricity was performed by Year 5 students from JKPS last month.

The story was also about the children who knew about the Boggarts and the adults who didn’t. As well as the coal men (and horses) who were losing their jobs at the same time other men were laying electricity cables.
The tale ends with the last Boggarts leaving Herne Hill to wander the world in search of work.
This incredible performance was acted by the two Year 5 classes named Ellie Simmonds and Emmeline Pankhurst. The Mog Chronicle spoke to some of the amazed audience and this is what they said:
Jenny: “I had no idea what the Boggarts were but this story really gave it away. Last week I went to the West End and this was 100 times better. I give it five stars!”
Gwen: “I personally loved how funny the Boggarts were.”
It wasn’t just the audience that loved the experience, this is what the incredible performers said:
Charlotte: “This was so extremely fun. I absolutely loved it. Next time, you should come!!”
Ffion: “”This was one of the best moments of my year. It was so so so so so so amazing. I really enjoyed it. Come and see it next year!!”
Evie: “It was fun but the best part was being able to rest at the end.”
Gabi: “It was epic!”
Cleo: “The show was extraordinary! Everybody knew their lines and were on cue. It was perfect.”
And finally – here is a quote from one of our extraordinary teachers.
Mr Aidan: “It was a really nice play.”
Our play was written by Mr. Allan who lives in Herne Hill and is a playwright in his real life too. He explained what his inspiration behind the story was: “I used to read a story to my daughter called ‘Fred the Boggart’ then I wanted to do a play for a school and annoyingly it was Covid so no schools said yes.
“But then after Covid, JKPS said yes. Last year the Year 5 class performed ‘Peters and the Wolves’ so this year in 2025 we did ‘The Last of the Boggarts.'”
We had such a great time that we think everyone should consider being on stage. We say – put on your costume and have a go like us!
