Recently, the Mog Chronicle got a world exclusive interview with a very special band. This band is probably not what you imagine – it is made up of the smallest students at JKPS. And they are called The Helen Kellers.
The band is the brainchild of nursery teacher Mr. Rhys who plays the guitar while his class sings. They make up their own songs, they write the lyrics and they are on Soundcloud!
From a song about ice cream to a counting song – a vast variety of creative tunes have been uploaded.
Mr. Rhys encourages the students to embrace art and music rather than focusing on English and Maths, which may be a little controversial! However – fear not, they are only three or four years old. And of course they do English and Maths too!
The Mog Chronicle was given special behind the scenes access to the band and was granted 10 minutes of their precious time to interview the band members and watch an exclusive backstage performance.
Here is the interview we scored:
Have you been practicing as the Helen Kellers for a long time?
Mr. Rhys: “We’ve been rehearsing the whole academic year.”
How do you come up with the ideas for the songs?
Mr. Rhys: “Someone says “ice cream” and then we come up with random words related to ice cream and turn it into a song and add music.”
Are you proud of yourselves for what you’ve achieved?
The Helen Kellers: “Yes, I feel happy,” said one band member. “I feel loving,” said another. “My colour monster would be ‘loving’,” said a third.
Why did you want to form a band?
Mr. Rhys: “Music is the most fun thing. Art is the most fun thing. The purpose of being human is to create. I hope to instill that in them and make them love music.”
