Recently, the Mog Chronicle team found out that they have been invited to go on a tour of the Houses of Parliament – an iconic location. Our local Member of Parliament Helen Hayes has invited us. The Mog team is extremely excited to be attending the Houses of Parliament. We will go on May 19 and spend a couple of hours on a tour and hopefully peeking inside the Council Chamber where MPs including the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer debate and vote on important issues that affect us all.
The Houses of Parliament has a long and interesting history. In fact, the oldest part of the building – Westminster Hall – is 1,000 years old and is owned by the Royal Family. Unsurprisingly, the tourist reviews reach 4.6 to 5 stars and the beautiful location receives up to one million visitors annually.
The Houses of Parliament are made up of several buildings: Westminster Hall, the House of Lords, the House of Commons, the council building and many more. The House of Commons is where the prime minister and MPs debate and create laws. This is also where MPs ask the prime minister questions, usually for half an hour on Wednesdays during a session known as Prime Minister’s Questions or PMQs. The House of Lords is similar to the House of Commons in many functions. It is where bills that have been debated by the House of Commons are sent to be considered thoroughly before becoming law.
We will be reporting back on our exciting trip to Parliament so be sure to stay tuned.
