St. Martin’s Lantern Parade

November 8 is an important date for Judith Kerr Primary School. It is the famous German tradition called the Lantern Parade. The event is done in celebration of the German Hero: Saint Martin.

Saint Martin was born in Hungary in 316. He was a Roman solider who later converted to Christianity. According to legend, he crossed paths with a beggar on a cold night and slashed his sword across half his coat to the man in need. This act of compassion and kindness is what we remember on St. Martin’s Day.

Well the parade was clearly enjoyed by everyone at JKPS and here are some positive reports from our students.

What did you enjoy most about the parade this year?
Henry, Y4: ‘’ I liked the buns and having a fire for everyone.’’
Emily, Y6: ‘’ I liked the free food and want more food for next year.’’
Anella, Y6: ‘’I liked how I got to make the fire as I was part of the Scouts, however I
recommend that next year we do more walking activities.’’
Sienna , Y6: ‘’ I liked the hot apple juice, but I wanted to have more activities.’’

On the other hand, we haven’t heard from any teachers yet.

Ms. Julia said: ‘’I really liked the lanterns but I want everyone to join in with the
singing.’’

This year there was a bonfire (which only the Scouts were allowed to get close to, ANNOYINGLY) and there were delicious buns and refreshing apple juice . Best of all, there was the singing of the Saint Martin song which you can listen to on YouTube.

Although this year’s parade was more outstanding than last years (and the years before that) we are sure that we can improve people’s experiences of this event by taking all these opinions into consideration. Thank you for coming and giving feedback.

Last but not least, massive shoutout to the Friends of Judith Kerr, who helped organise the whole thing. (We don’t know what we’d do without you!)

Thank you for reading our article.
