Summer Review: London Is Burning

BY STELLA AND JESSIE

On Thursday afternoon, the whole school crammed inside the hot, bustling school hall for the much-anticipated Year 2 production. This was based around London in 1666, during the Great Fire. However, it was also jumping forward in time to current facts about what to do in case of a fire. The title of the production was “London is Burning and other Year 2 learning!”

Immediately, as we entered the hall, we saw bright sunset colours, immaculate costumes and enthusiastic faces. The play was well rehearsed and everyone remembered their cues perfectly. We were impressed with the level of slickness, especially as we were watching the dress rehearsal, I am sure they were even more electric in front of their parents on show day! The songs were equally spectacular, they were clever covers of famous, well known songs. Our personal favourite was their version of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off.”

Another catchy song was the cover of Alicia Key’s song with the lines “This town is on Firrreeeeeeeeee!” beautifully worded and sung by all. Well done to Ms Ellen and Ms Chloe who worked cleverly to create this play.

One standout performance who blew us away was Noah (and all the other pigeons – Martha, Alice, Sonny, Ned), who played the part of a pigeon. You may think this could be a boring role, however he made it entertaining and funny, with his vogue level poses and enthusiasm throughout. We equally loved Iona, the actor playing MOG, as she bought sarcasm and brilliant cat like movements to the stage, her posture and paw control was superb. Although we have picked out a few stars of the show, we think every child in Year 2 was equally great and all had a chance to shine!

Now, shout out the siblings and parents who helped make the costumes and set, this really added pazzazz to the production!

We interviewed some Year 2s after the production to see how they found it, Toby said “I found it exciting but I was nervous!” Sonny and Iona agreed and said they felt “A mix of both”. Ned said he felt purely “Excited” about it all. When we asked if they could describe the play in one word, how would you describe it, they said the following:

Ned: Exciting

Sonny: Fun

Toby: Fun

Iona: Fascinating!

Below is an interview we did with both teachers on Thursday ahead of the production!

Interview with Ms Ellen and Ms Chloe before the Year 2 production

Stella: How have the rehearsals been?

Ms Ellen: It started off a bit rocky, when people don’t know their roles and parts and where they’re meant to be but it picked up. Throughout the weeks they improved so much!

Ms Chloe: They picked up the lyrics quickly and they lkearnttheir lines at home brilliantly.

Stella: If you could describe the play in one word, how would you describe it?

Ms Ellen: Smoking

Jessie: If you played a role who’s role would you want to be?

Woah that’s such a good question! I think I would personally be a pigeon because both Noah and Sonny have inspired me!

The king, lots of funny lines!

Jessie: What is your favourite scene in the play?

Ms Ellen: There is a really funny part when they are all leaving London and a certain character makes a great joke about packing his cheese and wine!

Ms Chloe: I love the part when a group huddle together and they look like they are planning something… when I know what they are really saying is ‘cuddle, cuddle, cuddle’

Stella: What is the theme of the production?

Ms Chloe: Great Fire of London meets Modern Day London!
